MUKUL's Biography

Mukul began DJing in 1989 and found his spiritual home at Anokha, Talvin Singh's seminal London club night (1996–2001). He continued his residency when the club moved from the Blue Note to The End, Fabric, and eventually to 93 Feet East. From 1997, he was also involved in an ancillary project, Calcutta Cyber Café – a more laid-back space for classical and experimental performances. During these years, Mukul invited a wide range of guest artists to the club, from Charlie Gillett and Matthew Herbert to the late Muslimgauze, and from Newcastle minimalists zovietfrance to classical sarod player Sohan Nilkanth.

Though much of his work lies outside the "Asian Underground" scene established by Joi, Anokha and others, Mukul continues to be in demand for his long-standing association with that sound and has played at the later generation of clubs including Swaraj, Shiva Sound System, and Eastern Drum & Breaks. His palette is much broader, however, and draws on sounds from North and West Africa, the Middle East, and East Asia, jazz and hip hop, Chicago house and Detroit techno, East London breakbeats and West London broken beats, mid-European clicks and cuts and mid-20th century composers. He is as comfortable playing intimate lounges and experimental hybrid media spaces as hardcore dance bunkers.

Mukul continues to forge connections between artists, running projects that unite young and old. traditional and modern (Suvara Afghani remix project with Radio FRO, Linz – see http://www.ambienttv.net/3/suvara/index.html), or bringing together India's leading electronic musicians (Midival Punditz and Bandish Projeckt) for the first time in Delhi, 2004.
